Teacher & Student Talk/Actions
Teacher: “Today we are going to test six chemical solutions to see if they get our fish to swim or exercise by using a behavioral assay. We will compare these solutions to a water control. This is similar to how a chemical engineer might test a pharmaceutical product.”
Teacher: “You are going be assigned to a station, where you will randomly choose a role card and prepare to do the experiment.”
Students move to assigned station and randomly choose a role card.
Teacher: “Now that you each have a role, read the ‘Chemical Experiment Procedure Card’ and then follow the procedure to run the experiment.”
Students read and follow directions of procedure card to run the chemical experiment.
The teacher gathers the classroom data from the students. After gathering data, but before recording it on the board, the teacher reveals the experimental conditions.
Students provide data to teacher.
Chemical Experiment Procedure Card
- Put control and experimental petri dishes over graph paper
- Add 1 ml of water to control dish
- Wait 1 minute
- Begin recording dish with ipad/camera
- Touch the back of the tail of 1 fish larva until it moves.
- Repeat with each of the other 2 fish larvae
- Open the video in the ‘Slo Mo Video’ app and convert it to play at 20% speed, then watch the video and record the number of lines each fish larva passed on it’s first burst of movement
- Add 1 ml of chemical solution (A,B,C,D,E, or F) to experimental dish
- Wait 1 minute
- Begin recording dish with ipad/camera
- Touch the back of the tail of 1 fish larva until it moves
- Repeat with each of the other 2 fish larvae
- Open the video in the ‘Slo Mo Video’ app and convert it to play at 20% speed, then watch the video and record the number of lines each fish larva passed on it’s first burst of movement
